As the temperature drops, We at Foothills group start to notice an increased amount of vehicles being booked in with similar symptoms. In this blog we will go through and look at these common issues, and what causes them.
1.) Windshield Wiper Motor Failure
During the winter months especially in Calgary we can have a wide array of different types of weather, everything from warm slushy days to cold icy days. We count on our wipers to clear our window so we can see clearly.
These conditions require us to push our vehicles wiper motors to the max. Clearing fresh morning snow or wet slush can cause parts to fail. If your wiper motor does fail it is important to get it looked at right away as it is a safety concern.
2.) A cracked windshield washer tank
This is a common issue people have when that first cold snap hits. Windshield washer fluid is rated for a certain temperature. If we have summer fluid in our vehicle when the temperature drops it can freeze and end up cracking the tank.
The best way to avoid this is to either use an all season washer fluid, or switch well before a cold snap can happen.
3.) A failed heating system
This is a common and an unfortunate issue that we see a lot during winter months. No one likes to be cold especially when driving. Your windows ice up and it makes driving that much tougher.
We really only use our heater system for 6 months out of the year, and for the other 6 months it seems we are using it at full capacity. The majority of the time the fail to system is caused by a clog in the heater core. This is a result of debris in the coolant. To avoid this make sure you are keeping up to date on your routine maintenance.
